Marine

The seas around The Lizard are teeming with all kinds of marine life, from Basking Sharks, whales and Oceanic Sunfish in the summer, to migrating and foraging sea and shoreline birds. The coastline and seas around the peninsula are an important habitat for seals, particularly Grey Seals, 38% of the global population of which make their home round the UK.

Intertidal and estuary habitats are also particularly important on The Lizard. The Helford Estuary is designated as a Marine Conservation Zone because of its native Oyster beds, and a little further along the coast, the Fal Estuary has nationally important maerl beds that are estimated to be around 4000 years old. There are many rock pools to explore on some beaches, where you can find shellfish, crabs and anemones, among other species.
