While The Lizard is not significantly wooded, there is woodland around the Helford River and its creeks, where some of the woods are classified as temperate rainforest. There are also other examples of deciduous woodland at the rear of the Kennack Sands dunes, and significant wood cover around the Loe on the Penrose Estate, where you can find wet woodland, such as willow carr. All these woods are ancient woodland (wooded areas where tree cover has been continuous for at least 500 years). They are important for plant species such as Bluebell, Ramson and Wood Anemone, and for woodland birds, such as Goldcrest.
The Lizard does have many fine examples of traditional Cornish hedges, which are made by packing stones and soils and then planting, as well as hedgerows. These are all biodiverse, supporting a range of distinct species, and providing corridors for bats and birds.
