Reawakening The Lizard

Wildlife Groundswell’s exciting new project: nature recovery across the Lizard peninsula

Drawing together and expanding on Wildlife Groundswell’s existing projects, and in collaboration with other organisations, Reawakening The Lizard is our most ambitious project to date! It aspires to restore nature on the Lizard peninsula to create a connected, diverse landscape, rich in plants and animals, benefitting wildlife and people.

28% of the land across The Lizard is designated for nature. This is a long way towards the county and national ambition of protecting 30% of the land (and sea) for nature by 2030. We all know that the Lizard peninsula is a special place. By taking collective action, can we ensure that we meet and hopefully exceed the challenge of having 30% of The Lizard protected and well-managed for wildlife?

We believe we can. We have produced a document detailing our initial ideas, as well as a list of 14 projects, which together should go a long way to achieving nature’s recovery. You can read more about it here

To help us develop a nature recovery framework, we want to hear from everyone. What are you already doing for nature? What should our collective priorities be? What do we want the Lizard to look like in 50 years, 100 years, time?

To help stimulate discussions we have started our Green Lizard Connectors initiative – do you want one of the fabulous new badges FOR FREE! Why not get involved and together we can reawaken The Lizard and hasten nature’s recovery across the peninsula.

Wildlife Groundswell is a Community Interest Company (CIC) on the Lizard peninsula, with three main aims:

  • Increasing carbon capture: planting trees and harnessing the power of the soil and scrubland to maximise carbon capture and biodiversity
  • Linking nature and community: starting conversations and hosting events to build community awareness and involvement
